Our History
How we got started:
A recovering METH Addict along with the help of her counselor started Mothers Against METH in July of 2005. A group of 10 people gathered for the first meeting. We discussed the program and took the information home to read. When we met the next Tuesday we discussed the fact that there needed to be a separate group, one that could work toward eliminating the METH epidemic in Gordon County. Our foremost efforts were to educate the community about the seriousness of Methamphetamine and other addictive drugs. We also saw the need to advocate for the establishment of a drug court and an inpatient treatment facility in our county. To begin and to continue our efforts we needed to raise money. So, Citizens against Methamphetamine (CAM) and Other Addictive Substances was born. This was not an easy process; we took three steps forward and two steps back and CAM is still changing as we discover new avenues open to us.
Someone told us about the Citizens Drug Task Force of Walker County, so we contacted them and requested a meeting. Three members of their group came to meet with us. They told us about how they got started and what they were doing at the time, it was very helpful.
We began meeting several times a week for the next few weeks to get organized. Our first official meeting of Citizens Against METH was held in August 2005. Since that time we have established a nonprofit organization, a board of directors, a steering committee, and ten working committees. We put together power point presentations, gathered local statistics, held several public education meetings with hundreds of people attending, participated in health fairs, held fundraisers and created a Web Site. In response to the families requesting help, we compiled information on low cost and no cost treatment facilities within Georgia, as well as information on the local support system in Gordon County.
We are a grassroots citizen's organization that desires to make a difference in our community. Click here for the goals of C.A.M.
